Sayadian’s Dr. Caligari

Stephen Sayadian’s 1989 re-invention of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is loaded with warped Zolo imagery. The sets and costumes (and even dialogue) incorporate a colorful Zolo edge into a dark and grotesque world.

I was 14 when this came out and it still ranks as one of my all-time favorites. Next to Videodrome of course. I didn’t know there was a movement called zolo before I read this. Nice to know people are keeping the neon spirit “alive”. Can you recommend me any more movies in this artsy-theatrical-neon genre or can I just consider Caligari to be one of a kind? I’ve read that Meet the Hollowheads is in the same vein…
    greetings from Dr D

Liquid Sky is definitely there. The Forbidden Zone (though its black and white).
Sayadian’s early porn stuff like Night Dreams and Cafe Flesh are also cool.
